Giddy up.

Here's my final for life parting 2, all oils on a 24x 34 in panel. I'm still tweaking things but let me know what anyone thinks please. the lighting on the picture is a little off, the cliff above their heads is washed out and the left corner is too dark. Face details.

Teens!

Well, here's my stab at Luigi's DAC challenge: teens. I think the glasses kid might be my favorite, but the metal kid is a close second.

Character challenges

Well, everyone knows i'm in no position to say anything about the lack of posts here...but since we've opened it up to basically sharing cool stuff about art, i thought i'd post a link to a really neat DeviantArt group that features different challenges and excercises to stretch those character design muscles:

Here's an example of one, for this week. I might try it out after/if i get my layout homework done. herp derp.

Behemotherium

Just another wierd creature design done in about1.5 hrs. I used the spine of a buffalo to create the sail structure on its back, then combined elephant, and rhino anatomy with reptilian traits to complete its design. I also threw in a small figure to show size in comparison to a human.

Sea Serpent

This was my first attempt at a one hour illustration. This took 1 hr and 18 minutes to sketch and add basic color and shading all done in photoshop.

1 Hour Creature

So this creature took an hour to draw unfortunately i was only able to get a basic gradient down for the color. I used a horse, crocodile, a few types of dinosaur and an ancient species of wort hog as inspiration.

here it is!

So, I started around 1:15 but I didn't finish, it is now 2:18 and I am posting this is as far as I took it. ill get faster as I go. its an okay start this is my 3rd computer illustration I want to do this more I am really liking the process and how forgiving it is. the undo short cut is MAGIC! Haha

our one hour

Victor and Raul now at the school starting at 1:15

alright, a new challenge if you're up to it.

so here are a couple of artists that do a fantastic job with one day sketch illustrations. they're not done for work, simply to challenge themselves in their free time! in an afternoon of free time they can whip out some pretty solid work, y'think we can do the same? it's all about consistent practice and perseverance! so this first guy is pascal campion, i met him in california...gave me some of the best advice for storytelling i've ever heard. the next guy is new to me, warwick johnson. cool name, eh?

www.pascalcampion.blogspot.com

http://warwickjohnsoncadwell.blogspot.com/

so if you want a new challenge, let's do an illustration in....two hours. one hour if you want to be a superhero. notice how these guys aren't getting real detailed...it's simple, bold information. maybe only two colors, real gestural in their acting, and the values clearly separate objects, zoning in on the focal points.

no theme, do what you want....but impress us!

One more quick post...

Follow these links to see the work of director Sylvain Chomet. His first film, The Triplets of Bellville, is easily one of the most original movies I've ever seen. His next film, to be released sometime this year, looks to be a classic.

Here's a trailer for The Triplets of Bellville -

...and for the Illusionist -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0I6T1RzdPk

...and an interview with Sylvain Chomet, with clips of The Illusionist. It's in French (of course he's French), but the imagery is really quite, y'know, something -

so that's a dose of inspiration for your day. have some you wanna share? post it!

Quick little character, and some links!

Hey everyone! Thanks to Zach for gathering us back together! Let's see if we can finish out this semester with some regular updates. I think instead of throwing out a theme, let's just share sketches, ideas, encouragements, inspirations, and yadda yadda yadda.

This was done as a bit of a joke for Phil Lietz. Tweren't more than a quick sketch, but i tought i'd throw down some colors and post it here.

And here are some links to browse:
http://www.theartcenter.blogspot.com/ ---> honestly, take an hour some day and catch up on the posts here...really really good drawing tips from some great artists in the industry! (the kind of stuff they don't really get around to teaching at RMCAD).
http://characterdesign.blogspot.com/ -----> the art center's sister blog, dedicated to interviewing the industry's top character designers. great insight, great inspiration.
http://floony.blogspot.com/ -----> some of the best work in animation is coming from France (more specifically, the Gobelin animation school). these artists aren't just into cartoons though, they'll definitely inspire us illustrators too! This artist, Floriane Marchix, produces some amazing background designs. fyi, she's 24. let's get our butts in gear!

Sometimes I Do Things

We've been working with pen and ink in Life Drawing 4 and as today was the last day we had a really long pose. I took this chance to nail my pencil drawing so I could do the best inking I could. I looked at some of Jim Lee's work around halfway through thinking later I might color it. I'm pretty surprised I actually sat down to get some color on it, but I'm glad I did as the model's image was still fresh in my mind. :)

B-B-B-Batman!

I don't really care for superheroes, but villianous crazy babes are something else.

I intended to post this for the batman theme week, but I never got around to scanning it before I went home for break. C'est la vie.

If you take a look at my main sketchblog, there's a bunch of other drawings and things left-over from 2009 that i've posted. Now i'm going to have a nap.

The Shape of Things to Come!

I cannot believe how much drawing everyday has improved my confidence in drawing! I actually think I have drawn more over break then I ever have during school. All of these drawings are successful because I started with BIG shapes! Its like trying to make a pizza slice by slice, it might taste alright but you wont get a consistently good slice, start with the bigger idea! Anyways, here are two cars a buggy thing inspired by the way cars sometimes look in manga and a hover Audi that looks a little too retro for me. The spaceship is inspired by Axelay for the SNES and this idea I had for a bubble cockpit. It helped so much to try and think of the whole gesture of the spaceship rather than trying to perfect the cockpit design like I was at first. So I drew a couple little spaceships off to the side using just shapes; I knew I wanted the boosters to go underneath so it felt like i was on top of them, and a long spirey fuselage. With the whole thing seeming pretty stable i had an easier time working on the details!
